WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO?
On the last Sunday of the month, the Sunday School collects all the loose change from the offering plate and donates it to a worthwhile cause. The money collected in March will go to support STARS. STARS stands for Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society. It is a fully accredited aeromedical program providing the delivery of emergency care to the critically ill and injured patient. Founded in 1985, through partnerships with community, business and government, STARS' primary goal is to provide excellent patient care. This commitment and responsibility to the patient has resulted in a program dedicated to three main components - service, teaching and research. STARS operates two medevac helicopters. One in Calgary and one in Edmonton, serving more than 90 percent of Alberta's population and communities in southeastern British Columbia. In addition, a back-up helicopter is used for substitution when required due to aircraft maintenance or repair. Two pilots, a nurse and a paramedic are ready 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK at both the Calgary and Edmonton bases. As well, an emergency physician either flies on the mission or provides on-line medical direction to the nurse and paramedic. STARS coordinates repatriation trips for patients requiring insured or private aeromedical transport from outside Alberta or Canada back to Alberta. This usually involves STARS air medical crew and the use of an airplane funded through private insurance companies. The STARS Emergency Link Centre is an advanced 24-hour communications centre. When an emergency call comes in, a communications specialist can link multiple callers to determine the most appropriate medical response for the patient. The STARS Outreach Team conducts educational sessions on advanced medical skills, patient transport preparation, access to air transport resources, and landing zone safety and preparation. STARS has initiated the first mobile Human Patient Simulator Program in Canada. This computerized mannequin is a medical training device housed in a motorhome to be taken to rural and urban communities. It is used to simulate medical emergency scenarios to help health care providers develop hands-on skills for situations they rarely encounter and have limited opportunity to practice. Your support is needed! Large or small, your donation ensures that advanced emergency medical care and rapid transport are there when needed. Your contribution helps strengthen and secure STARS mission to serve the needs of the critically ill and injured patient. |
